      Robert Hodgson was born on 21 July in Linton, Yorkshire. In the Woodhouse sailed from Bridlington in Yorkshire and stopped on the way in five weeks it reached Long Island. (Source: L og of the Woodhouse in the Devonshire House Library in London.) Among its passengers, Robert Hodgson landed at New Amsterdam (now New York City) on 1 June Origins. He was the second of the three sons of Lord Thomas Howard (d), of Worksop (younger brother of Henry Howard, 7th Duke of Norfolk (d), both sons of Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk (d)) by his wife Mary Elizabeth Savile (d). Lord Thomas' third, and youngest, son was Richard Howard (b) who died at 35 (in ) in Rome, where he was a Canon of St. Peter Basilica.
